What could be more unpleasant than a YouTube video screaming out loud while you’re listening to your favorite chill playlist on Spotify?
Fortunately, if you’re a macOS user, there’s Background Music, a free application that, once installed, can automatically pause/play your music player when other audio sources are launched/stopped. This works with iTunes (Music), Spotify, VLC, etc.

With this application, you can also independently control the volume of each of your applications.
It’s also possible to record your system audio through Background Music.
You can install it by downloading and running the .pkg available on the website or by using the following Brew command:
brew install --cask background-music
