How to Connect HDMI Laptop to DisplayPort Monitor

Many monitors have multiple ports, including HDMI, DisplayPort, and VGA. However, not all monitors have these ports, so you may face a challenge when connecting an HDMI laptop to a monitor with only DisplayPorts.

To solve this problem, there are two approaches you can take. You can use a USB-C adapter if your laptop has a USB Type-C Alternate mode port. If your laptop does not have this port, the only solution is to use an HDMI-to-DisplayPort adapter.

HDMI to DisplayPort Adapter

Connecting your HDMI laptop to a DisplayPort monitor can be easily achieved with the use of an adapter. However, it’s important to note that a passive adapter may not properly translate HDMI output to a DisplayPort input, and as a result, you may not be able to utilize all of the functionalities of the monitor. Instead, an active adapter, which contains computing power to actively translate signals between HDMI and DisplayPort, is recommended.

The quality of video and other features will depend on the minimum specifications of your monitor and laptop’s HDMI port. To avoid any bottlenecks, it’s best to use an adapter that meets the proper HDMI and DisplayPort standards.

When selecting an adapter, it’s ideal to get a male-to-male adapter to directly connect your devices without using additional cables. You can connect the HDMI end of the adapter to your laptop and the DisplayPort end to the monitor. However, a male HDMI-to-female DisplayPort adapter is also suitable, and in this case, you’ll need to use a DisplayPort cable to connect the adapter’s female port to your monitor.

USB Type-C Hub or Adapter

Connecting your laptop to a DisplayPort monitor is best achieved by using a USB Type-C hub or adapter/cable if your laptop has a USB-C port that supports DisplayPort over USB Type-C (Alt mode). These ports can transport DisplayPort audio/video (AV) output while fully reflecting the DisplayPort standard’s capability.

To determine if your port supports this feature, check for a DP or Thunderbolt icon next to it. However, some compatible ports may not have any icons, so it’s best to check with official sources.

If your laptop has a USB-C port that supports DisplayPort over USB Type-C, you can use a USB Type-C to DisplayPort Cable or Adapter to connect to the monitor. Alternatively, you can use a Type-C hub or dongle with a DisplayPort output.

It’s important to ensure that your USB Type-C cable supports carrying DisplayPort audio/video data before making the connection. Some USB-C manufacturers may not comply with proper specifications, so it’s best to use a USB-IF-certified cable to ensure compatibility.

To connect your laptop to a DisplayPort monitor using a USB Type-C cable, simply connect the USB Type-C connector to the appropriate port on your laptop and the DisplayPort end to the monitor. If you’re using a hub or dongle, you’ll need an additional DisplayPort cable to connect the monitor to the hub.
