Customize a theme on Windows 11

Microsoft gives you the ability to fully customize a theme on Windows 11 on several levels:

  • the background (wallpaper);
  • the sounds (of the system);
  • the (accent) color;
  • the shape of the mouse cursor.

Warning: at the end of the tutorial, remember to save the theme you will build, otherwise you will lose all the modifications.

Customize the wallpaper

With each new edition of Windows, Microsoft offers beautiful wallpapers, but if you’re like me, you certainly like change and especially personalization.

Change the wallpaper image

Enter Windows 11 Settings and go to Personalization .

Then click on Background where you can change the wallpaper.

Click the Customize your background drop- down list .

Select Image  to use a single background image.

Choose one of the recently used images or browse photos to choose one from your computer’s disk.

Select the image you want to see as your wallpaper and click Choose Image .

Watch the preview. If the image does not appear in the format you want (it is not entirely visible for example), it is possible to adjust the image (see below).

Click the Choose a fit for your desktop image drop-down list . The desktop image can be adjusted in several ways:

Fill (the image is magnified to take the full width and length of the screen)

Adjust (the image is visible as a whole, if there is a gap on the sides or above and below, then Windows offers to choose a background color)

Stretch (the image is stretched along its length or height to fill the space)

Use a solid color as the wallpaper

  1. Prefer a nice solid color to an image?
    Go to Settings > Personalization > Background and select Image or Slideshow from the Customize your background drop-  down list .
  2. Then choose Solid Color .
  3. A palette of 25 colors appears. If the color you want is not in the list, then click Show Colors .
  4. A color chart opens up to you. Drag the slider until you reach the desired shade. The ruler just below allows you to obtain a more or less light shade.
  5. You can also go further by clicking on More .
  6. Discover then different possibilities to find a precise color, thanks to the color codes:
    • HTML
    • RGB
    • TSV
  7. For example, I use the HTML color code for blue from the Le Crabe Info site and press OK .
  8. Here is the result on my desk, a deep blue!

Set up a slideshow and customize it

  1. Go further with a slideshow!
    Still in Settings > Personalization > Background , this time choose Slideshow from the drop-down list.
  2. Then click Browse to choose a picture album to create your new slideshow.
  3. Select a folder containing the images to use for the slideshow and choose Choose this folder .
  4. Then, configure the slideshow of your personalized theme, starting by modifying the frequency of changing the wallpaper on the line Change the image every  :
    • 1 minute
    • 10 minutes
    • 30 minutes
    • 1 hour
    • 6 hours
    • 1 day
  5. In a Windows folder, the image files are arranged in alphabetical order, but you can decide another sequence. Enable the Play images in random order option .
  6. For laptops, the slideshow freezes when using battery power, but you can still use the slideshow. To do this, enable the Let the slideshow run even if I’m using battery option .

Customize sounds

51 actions (or events) exist on Windows 11. These events are listed in 3 sections: Windows, File Explorer and Windows Speech Recognition. The vast majority of these actions are accompanied by a sound that can be modified or removed

; it is even possible to add a sound to an action that does not have one by default.

Learn how to add and edit system sounds  :

  1. Open Settings , go to Personalization , then to Themes .
  2. Then go to Sounds .
  3. The sound scheme used by default is called Default Windows Sounds . It is possible to create a new model or to modify this one.
  4. Most events have their own sound. An event is for example a low battery alert or a system notification.
  5. To test the sound of an event, click on one of them, for example “The peripheral could not connect”, and make Test . You will hear the sound called “Windows Hardware Fail”.
  6. You don’t like it? To change it, it’s very simple. First click on the Sounds drop-down list . Then choose another sound, for example Windows Error .
  7. Please ? Then save your new sound pattern by clicking Save As…
  8. Name the sound model of your custom theme and hit OK .
  9. It’s not over, click on Apply to apply the changes, then click OK when it’s over.

Customize colors

On Windows 11, colors relate to two aspects: the mode (dark or light) and the accent color. The latter is used in particular in the Windows Settings application, but also in new modern Windows applications.

  1. In  Settings > Personalization > Themes , enter Color .
  2. In Choose your mode , you can choose:
    • Full Clear Mode
    • Total dark mode

  3. You can use Transparency Effects to make windows and surfaces translucent. The colors of the wallpaper influence the tint of the windows.
  4. The accent color is visible everywhere, especially in the Settings. By default, the color is dark blue, but you can choose any color you want from the Windows color list. Or by using the color swatch by clicking Show Colors . Or an HTML, RGB or HSV color code.
  5. The accent color can also vary automatically depending on the main color of the wallpaper. Go back up a bit, click on the Accent Color dropdown  and select Automatic .

    • Show accent color on Start screen and taskbar .
    • Show accent color on title bars and window borders .

Customize the mouse cursor

  1. Go to Settings > Personalization > Themes and enter Mouse Cursor .
