What is a MAC address?

A MAC ( Medium ccess C ontrol ) address , also called physical address or hardware address, is a unique identifier assigned to each network device (Ethernet, WiFi or Bluetooth). This is a 48-bit address divided into six bytes and made up of 12 characters, often separated by hyphens or colons (for example, 00-1A-7D-DA-71-15 or 00 :1A:7D:DA:71:15). It is in a way the identity card of the material.

It is the network card manufacturers who assign this unique identifier to each piece of equipment. Thus, it is impossible for two network cards from the same manufacturer to have the same MAC address. Note that the MAC address is “burned” into the firmware of each network card.

You may need to know the MAC address of a device (computer, smartphone, tablet, etc.) for multiple reasons. In particular, this makes it easy to identify a device connected to your network. Also, you can configure MAC filtering to allow the use of WiFi only to equipment in your home or even start your PC remotely .
