How to increase your website’s Domain Authority in 6 Steps

Whether you’re a seasoned specialist or new to the world of SEO, you’ve no doubt heard of domain authority (DA). The DA score is used extensively by many SEO experts for a better understanding of the overall performance of websites and their ranking potentials.

But what exactly is domain authority? How important is it to your SEO strategy? and how to increase the domain authority of your website?

What is Domain Authority?

Created by Moz, Domain Authority (DA) is a ranking metric you can use to predict a website’s likelihood of ranking on search engine results pages (SERPs).

So, if your website has a high score, it means it has a better chance of ranking higher in the SERPs, and receiving, de facto, more and better web traffic.

Another way to look at the definition of domain authority is that it’s also a good way to measure your SEO efforts and compare your website’s strength to your competitors’ websites (for more details, we invite you to read our article “  Domain Authority: What is domain authority? ”).

But, do not confuse domain authority with page authority, as there is a slight difference between the two.

Domain Authority vs Page Authority

Domain authority indicates the ranking strength of all of your domains (and subdomains). While Page Authority examines the ranking ability of individual pages.

Also, what domain authority score should you be targeting?

What is a good Domain Authority score?

Domain Authority is a score based on a logarithmic scale from 0 to 100. This just means that going from a score of 70 to 80 is much more difficult than going from 20 to 30.

You can use a tool like Moz Domain Analysis or SEMrush to determine your website’s domain authority.

Many factors go into calculating domain authority. “Domain Authority is calculated by evaluating multiple factors (over 40), including linking root domains and total number of links, into a single Domain Authority score. “, in the words of Moz.

And, to give you an idea, sites like Google, Apple or Microsoft will have a high DA (between 95 and 100).

On the other hand, if your website is new, then your DA will be low (possibly between 10 and 20).

To categorize what a good domain authority is, consider these ranges:

• Below 30 is weak
• 30 to 40 is below average
• 40 to 50 is average
• 50 to 60 is good
• 60 to 70 is very good
• Above 80 is is great

An important point to remember is that DA helps you predict the “success” of your website in search results, it does not necessarily represent success . The metric is not used by Google and increasing your DA will not automatically increase your website’s ranking in Google search results.

It is, therefore, best to use it for comparison with other websites in the SERPs.

Why is domain authority important?

  • Domain Authority (DA) is an indicator that measures the effectiveness of an SEO strategy . Concretely, this tool determines the relative strength of the backlink profile of your website.
    The more you strive to build a network of quality backlinks , the more your score increases and the better your SEO ranking. Therefore, you get more organic traffic to your website. Ultimately, this reinforces the trust, credibility and authority of the latter.
  • Also, Domain Authority helps you partner with bigger brands and companies.

Is domain authority a ranking factor?

In absolute terms, domain authority does not condition the ranking established by search engines. However, it is easy to notice the existence of a correlation between the two: Indeed, the domain authority integrates the factors to which the search engines give importance in their rankings .

The more relevant or high authority websites linking to your website, (and this sends positive signals to search engine crawlers that your site is useful to searchers and will thus improve the quality of natural results) the better your indexing and ranking on the SERPs will be.

How to increase the domain authority of your website?

Increasing the domain authority of a website is done in 6 main steps:

  • creating quality content;
  • acquiring quality backlinks from authority sites;
  • optimizing the internal linking of your website;
  • setting up external links to quality sites;
  • removal of toxic links;
  • using the HARO service to build brand authority.

Create quality content

Quality content is the backbone of any SEO strategy . It helps to establish a climate of trust and retain the target audience. It helps to make your website more visible in search engine results.

The quality of the content also helps to increase the domain authority of your website, attract the attention of partners and acquire solid backlinks.

What is quality content?

Quality content is both active and engaged, relevant and reliable, unique and original, non-commercial and free from plagiarism. It is produced in such a way as to bring added value to the target audience .

Quality content is optimized for search engines (optimization of title tags and Meta description, image optimization, presence of relevant keywords, etc.).

How do I find worthy topics to link to?

There are several solutions that can help you find topic ideas and relevant keywords. Among these is the SEOquake extension . It also allows you to view detailed statistics related to your search.

Get quality links

You need to choose your backlinks carefully ! When it comes to domain authority, high-quality backlinks are king. The more you have, the higher your score will be.

Backlinks play a huge role in calculating domain authority. Additionally, backlinks are one of the two most important ranking factors.

There are several ways to get backlinks to boost your link profile. Keep these things in mind:

  • Create link-worthy content (see above): Authoritative websites only link to your content if it’s remarkable. So take your time and create blogs, videos, etc. that are better than what already exists on the Internet. It will be worth it, guaranteed.
  • Promote your content: Quality content alone is not enough. Give it a boost by promoting it on your mailing list and on social media. This helps you keep tabs on your work, which increases your backlink opportunities.
  • Implement a link building strategy: Top-notch content and a consistent promotional strategy get the ball rolling. But, you’ll also want to take a more proactive approach to link building. To do this, contact authoritative sites and ask them to link to you. Just be aware that there is a right way and a wrong way to do it, which we cover in our article on link building.
  • Contribute in guest blogging: Finally, guest blogging for reputable sites can be a great way to build backlinks. For one, you may be able to link to your own website in the content you write. And second, people who read your guest post might like it, check out your website, and then link to some of your pages.

Optimize internal linking

Internal linking consists of inserting links into your content that lead to internal pages on your website. This practice promotes the navigation of Internet users and better indexing by search engines.

Audit your site and remove bad links

While inbound links are vital for your website’s domain authority and ranking, having bad links can do more harm than good.

Links taken from a spammy website can lower your website’s domain authority. And in some cases, it can even lead to a penalty from Google.

To prevent this from happening, you should check your site for toxic links and remove them as soon as possible. You can use different SEO tools to identify harmful links by going through a comprehensive link profile of your website.

And if you can’t remove those links, you can use Google Search Console to disavow or ignore those links. Therefore, Google’s crawler will not consider unnatural or spammy backlinks when indexing.

Building brand authority with HARO

HARO is a sourcing platform that connects professionals from various backgrounds: journalists with bloggers, public relations specialists with marketing experts, etc. Once registered and subscribed to relevant topics, you start receiving source requests, around 2-3 times a day.

Should you ignore sites with low domain authorities?

Your primary objective is to obtain quality backlinks, preferably those from websites related to your theme and having a high DA. However, you should not neglect sites with low DA, but which produce good quality editorial content.

The quality of the content is the first factor that search engines take into account. If you have to choose between a website with a DA score of 30 with relevant content and another with DA 60 unrelated to your theme, always choose the first.

What should be remembered?

Domain authority is an important marketing metric because it can help you build a solid SEO strategy that propels your site to the top of search engine rankings.

Remember that Domain Authority predicts success , it does not guarantee it. For this reason, improving your score should never be the end goal.

To increase your website’s domain authority, follow the 6 steps we talk about in this article. When you do, your DA will increase, along with your site’s ability to rank well in search engine results. Good luck !
