We are more or less a texting world. What was once a mode of recreation or a secret messaging channel is now a platform for communication in its own right in almost every relationship, formal and informal. Google Chat is one such platform that facilitates conversations in the workplace and personal space.
Sometimes our chat windows are empty, slow and almost dying. And some days they are inundated with important conversations. In such situations, you must attend the chats simultaneously. Back and forth between conversations not only takes time, but can also be fatal – if the wrong message went to the wrong person.
To make those busy days easier, Google Chat has the option to pop up chats.

What is a chat window?
Google Chat’s “Open Chat in Popup” feature is a saving grace when managing multiple conversations. The chat window appears and exits in a smaller window. You can have one chat in progress in the main Google Chat window and one or more chats in pop-up windows. But on one condition. You cannot have the same conversation in the main window and in the pop-up window. You have to choose.
The ‘Chat Pop-Up’ option is only available on your computer and not on your phone.
How to open a Google chat in a pop-up?
First, launch Google Chat on your computer. If you’re already in a chat and want to open another one, just look to the left of your screen – the “Chat” section. Hover your cursor over the chat you want to appear. You’ll see an arrow pointing southeast in the lower right corner of the chat tile. It’s the “Open in Popup” button. Click on it.
You can have as many chat pop-ups as your Google Chat window can accommodate (usually a maximum of 5) – more on a full screen and fewer on a minimized screen. Typically, you can have an average of 6 chats – 5 pop-ups and one conversation covered on the main Google Chat window.
To experience the ongoing conversation in the main window, simply minimize your chat popups. Click the “Minimize” button at the top right of the pop-up window or simply double-click the title bar to minimize. Do the same to maximize the chat window.
How to Open a Fullscreen Chat Window
If you need to blow up a chat popup in full screen and on the Google Chat “main window”, here’s what you do. Click on the “Open full screen chat” button displayed with a double arrow pointing northeast in the upper right corner of the chat window.
The chat popup will open in your main Google Chat window and disappear as a popup.
How to reduce the chat window to a popup
If you want to minimize a full screen conversation to a pop-up window, click the “Exist full screen” button in the upper right corner of the conversation on the main Google Chat window.
The chat will instantly disappear from the main window and appear as a chat window.
