Special characters, a real headache…
When entering text, you may need to insert special characters which are unfortunately not available on your computer keyboard. This is particularly the case of accented capital letters or the famous æ and œ stuck together in certain words of the French language.
Usually, to insert a special character in your text, you can either use the character map present on Windows and Mac computers or use the keyboard shortcut corresponding to the special character. The problem is that looking up special characters in the character map can be tedious and time-consuming, while keyboard shortcuts aren’t always easy to remember. This is where MyCharacters comes in!
Easily and quickly insert special characters in your texts with MyCharacters
MyCharacters is a small software available on Windows that allows you toone-click access to the special characters you use most often.
Light and free, the program is available in installable or portable version. As a reminder, the portable version does not require any installation. However, for this software, I recommend the installable version instead. The latter offers two significant additional features. First of all, you have the possibility to start the program at the same time as Windows. This way, you won’t waste your time opening MyCharacters every time you start up. Also, the installable version allows you to open the program using a handy hotkey.
The operation of MyCharacters is very simple. As a first step, you must register in the software all the special characters that you use frequently.
Then, whenever you need to insert a special character in your word processing software, press the key F10 on your keyboard to open the program window.
Once opened, double-click on the special character(s) to automatically insert it into your text. Note that you can also select the special character and then press the key. Insert or use the keyboard shortcut CTRL + VS to copy it to the clipboard.
2. Then proceed to install the program. By default, MyCharacters is available in two languages: German or English. However, if you want to put the program in French, download the translation file made by me. Once downloaded, unzip the ZIP archive and copy the French.Ing file in the following folder: C:\Program Files\MyCharacters\lang
3. Now open MyCharacters, then start by adding the special characters you use frequently. To do this, click on the hamburger menu (the three horizontal lines), then on ” Add new character “.
4. Choose the position of the character in the list (above or below), then enter the unicode code of the character and add a comment if you wish. To find out the unicode code of a character, use the Windows character map.
Each character is specified by the “\u” prefix, followed by its hexadecimal code. For example, if the unicode code for your special character is U+00A9you must enter \u00A9 in the unicode box.
Note that the program supports several unicode codes for a single entry. This is especially handy for characters that work in pairs, such as quotation marks. All you have to do is enter the two unicode codes in succession (example: \u00AB\u00BB for the so-called “French” quotation marks).
To add characters to MyCharacters faster, you can also use the program’s character file. To do this, click on the hamburger menu, then on ” Go to character file “.
Then open the Characters.ist file with Notepad and use the same syntax, i.e.: unicode=comment. Respect the spaces and don’t forget to save the modifications before closing the window.
5. Now, to insert special characters in a text, several solutions are available to you. At first, open MyCharacters using the hotkey F10. Then, double-click on the special character(s) of your choice to automatically insert them into your text. You can also copy-paste the special characters using the keyboard shortcut CTRL + VS and CTRL + V. Finally, last solution, select the special character in the list, then press the key Insert of your keyboard.
If necessary, you will find all the program documentation by clicking on the hamburger menu of MyCharacters, then on “Help”.
