Remnants of the Precursors by Ray Fowler is a modern adaptation of a strategy game released in 1993 and called “Master of Orion”. In this space conquest game, you started with a colonist ship and two exploration ships orbiting your planet. You then set off to discover new worlds, to colonize them and possibly wage war against new extraterrestrial races, against the backdrop of heaps of legends about the Orions, a master race who controlled the galaxy.
Remnants of the Precursors is therefore an independent game that takes up the gameplay and universe of Master of Orion. You can embody one of the 10 alien races to lead it to victory in order to dominate the galaxy.
Obviously, the interface has been redesigned to make it simpler, the game’s AI is much more competitive and you can choose its level. The diplomatic system has also been revised to allow more interactivity than before and the maps are much larger to accommodate even more ships so that space combat is even more epic.
In short, lots of cool stuff that will please you without distorting the original spirit of Master of Orion. Remnants of the Precursors is like a good old retro game released recently :-).
It is available on Linux, Windows and macOS and is completely free (but you can make a small donation). And if at first glance the game seems complex to you, don’t worry, there is a user manual available here .
