What Are File Name Extensions?

The file extensions used to identify a file and run it with the appropriate program. In Windows, you may especially have file extensions like .exe, .dll, .pdf, .doc, .jpg, .png and many more. The file name extension is appended to the end of the label after a period. Example: lenomdemonfichier .doc

By default, the Windows operating system does not display file name extensions. However, from a security point of view alone, it is recommended to always check the extension of a file before running it, especially those downloaded from the web.
